Once you enter and pass through the foyer (GIANT wizard statue alert!), you arrive in the central section of the shop. Across the front is a long aisle of tumbled stones that almost runs the length of the room. After the row of stones is row after row of glass cases full of statuary, etc. All along the back wall are sections of books, and on the far left wall are the candles, herbs, etc. I immediately went right to the back to look through their selection of books and found the magick books in the first nook – almost exclusively Wicca. They had a fair amount of books, but they were far too generic and simple for me. But, as I always say, there’s something for everyone, and that something doesn’t have to be meant for me. Someone who is just starting out might enjoy these books and be a tool to get them started. I glanced at the other “new age” type books as I passed by, but went on to the far left wall.
Here, I was in the incense and candle sections. The incense selection was adequate. They had the individual stick incense you can pick and choose from as other shops do, but nothing unusual. They had a large selection of sage and sage blend bundles for burning, and some powdered blends from GW. They had the glass 7-day candles in all colors with both plain glass and glass painted with chakra information. They also had chime and votive candles in a variety of colors. Then came the herbs, where my mind was blown. F&AD has around 120 different herbs all lined up in rows on the wall. Each bag had a sizeable amount of the labeled herb inside, along with a description of what the herb can be used for. I believe they have the largest herb selection of any shop I’ve visited here in Georgia. I was incredibly impressed and picked out several things.
I had been eyeing the row of stones since I came in but I waited to look it over until almost the end. Again, I was pretty blown away by their selection. Each type of stone had its own box, and though each one didn’t have a huge amount available, there was an incredible amount of different varieties – possibly 150 if my count is correct. On the counter space in front of the containers were typed names and descriptions of the properties of each stone. This attention to detail is where F&AD excels, as I have yet to see a shop that gives this information with a selection of this size. I have a limited knowledge of stones, so it can be difficult going to into a shop such as Phoenix & Dragon to pick stones without a great deal of prior research. Here, I can pick one up on a whim.
Finally, I visited the glass cases that were lined throughout the middle of the shop. They have an extensive selection of statuary, and an impressive collection of larger and/or more delicate stones, also with explanations of their properties. On the front endcaps of the cases near the registers was a whole section of do-it-yourself products, from essential oils and bath salts to bottles and other packaging for things like deodorant. I have yet to see that in any shop except maybe health food stores.
F&AD is a bit of a drive from where I live, but it’s well worth the effort.
